“Canary in a coal mine”
I’ve seen this idiom repeated more times than I’d have liked these last few weeks.
The history behind it seems particularly cruel
Using the fragility of a bird to detect danger
Subjecting the canary to death so that others may be saved
You may recoil at the comparison
Good
Because it is not a stretch for what is unfolding outside your front door.
I keep wondering
How uncomfortable does it need to get
Before it becomes an issue for you
This isn’t about right or left
Or blame
Your default setting as a human being should be
Any act of disregard, cruelty, or discrimination (however benign you may excuse it) toward anyone is WRONG. PERIOD.
We are not sacrificing canaries to appease the big bad wolf
He is no longer waiting to be let inside
Oh no
He’s been offered a seat at the table
Our table.
Our country.
It is our responsibility and duty not to serve him one canary.
